That’s where it all started, in 2009. In Berlin-Mitte. Brunnenstrasse. Formerly used as an art gallery, we didn’t change the interior that much. We left the concrete floor coating the way it was, only added the wall unit from the 50ies and some other furniture.
This was the set up were we, Alex Flach and Andreas Hesse, wanted to build up a space that was part skate store, part street wear boutique, and a place where art exhibitions and launches could happen. And where all different kind of people could meet – musicians, artists, skateboarders, BMX riders. From here or elsewhere. Exactly what we have encountered in Berlin’s skateboarding scene and in its club culture. And we wanted to take this approach into our store.
Civilist / Nike SB
After two years running Civilist we were offered the space next door where we continued to have pop-up bars with Nike SB, a one day only lobster restaurant, Vans Syndicate showroom, a keinemusik launch, art exhibitions to the Stüssy Berlin store.
Redecorating the venue over and over again was exhausting. So we asked Nike SB for a more permanent option. With their support we were finally able to realize one of our longest lasting ideas: putting iconic parts of the Neue Nationalgalerie into our store. It’s a tribute to our favorite skate spot that was built by Bauhaus master Mies van der Rohe. Therefore the concrete stairs with all the surrounding steel/glas frames. The “National” still our favorite spot.
